Satellites and Earth Observation Solutions to Water Challenges in India

The European Space Agency (ESA), in partnership with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), is supporting the Government of West Bengal, India, to enhance water resilience and disaster risk reduction using Earth Observation (EO) tools. This project aims to address water quality issues affecting about 1.65 million people across three West Bengal districts, who are impacted by arsenic, fluoride, and salinity contamination in groundwater—a critical issue given that 85% of rural water in India relies on groundwater sources.
