University of Oxford Marine Pollution

Product by University of Oxford

University of Oxford applies Bayesian statistical techniques to provide assessments of probabilities and uncertainties associated with the identification of potential sources of oil pollution. It achieves this through the backward simulation of the oil diffusion process from the observed slick captured by satellite imagery. This approach can incorporate other data sets, including Automatic Identification System (AIS), to improve the accuracy and speed of source identification. The technique is being trialled in the Malaysian Malacca Strait.
